Wind

Just a quick post.  I just had my last midterm so I am pretty exhausted at the moment and my brain isn't really functioning enough for me to write anything meaningful.  This look is actually from a few weeks ago and I forgot to post it.  In person, this dress is really too fancy to wear to school, so I try and dress is down as much as possible. I love the mix of textures in this look: the lace detail on the tee, the sequins on the sweater, and the pleating on the dress. It's kind of my "I wish I was a punk ballerina but this will do for now" oufit.  Also, the wind was super intense the say I took these, so feel free to laugh at the shots of me with my hair all messed up! Enjoy!

Madewell dress. Free People sweater. Jason Wu for Target tee. Steve Madden boots. Michael Kors watch.

Hope you are all having a lovely monday!

Rain or Shine

The weather has been so crazy! It's warm then freezing or pouring then bright bright sunshine; it just won't make up its mind! It's so cold now (pretty much the opposite of my last post).  Guess my spring dresses will have to wait a little while longer...

Right now it is midterm week so my outfits each day basically consist of me looking like a hobo to go take my exams.  I wore this last week to school in the pourring rain.  I thought it was a super cute rainy day look, but I obviously couldn't take any shots of it in the heavy downpour. So, I took some photos on Saturday, and I decided the outfit works when it's not raining too (minus the rain boots and umbrella, of course). The pictures are a little hard to see because it was actually really bright out, but I tried to edit them as best as I could.  I wanted the shots to be true to how I actually wore the outfit, so I included my umbrella, which probobly looked so weird to my neighbors because there wasn't a cloud in sight that day! Enjoy:)

Madewell shirt, Free People pants, Madewell blazer, Dannijo necklace, Hunter boots, rhinestone bracelet stolen from my mom, flower bracelet from Mexico, Michael Kors watch, Tous ring.

What is your go-to rainy day look? Let me know!

Feels like Summer

It has been a little unusually warm out (it reached 52 degrees yesterday!), so I figured it was an appropriate time to break out a new flower crown, a bold color, and printed pants, all generally associated with spring (although I prefer them year round), ensuing stares around my school halls by students still decked out in the usual winter attire of my area: Uggs, Solo's, Vintage Havana tees and American Apparel sweatshirts (to generalize it).  And here I was thinking I could just walk in and slip under the radar in a bright yellow sweater, polka dot pants, and a wreath of daisys to top it off. I was mistaken.

The general reaction was horror (felt of course by my closest friends) as they gathered around me decked out in the dark colors and comfy sweatpants most worn in the week before midterms. Other reactions were on the opposite end of the spectrum: extreme delight over my halo of flowers by students I had never even uttered a word to.  There is no better feeling (as far as compliments and things of that nature go) than being told you did something right by a total stranger. It's that validation that you just can't seem to achieve when your mother tells you your school photo isn't as awful as you think it is and that it's actually the most beautiful photo she has ever seen of you (true story of this past year, and I still don't believe her).

I mark this experiment as a success. Throughout my short life, I have never been a fan of sticking to seasonal dressing rules. I think white looks better in winter and it is completely appropriate to layer sweaters in the summer if that is what one desires. So why can't we wear color and flowers and prints in January? Ponder that philosophical question as you peruse the following photos that you have now been reading about for three paragraphs as I fail once again to put my rambling addiction to rest.

sweater: Gap, pants: Blank NYC, ballet flats: Cole Haan, bag: Marc by Marc Jacobs, long necklace: vintage, flower crown: Gardenhead

Please ignore the fact that my face is a little awful looking in some of these shots; I have been feeling pretty sick recently and the flu is rapidly attacking the majority of my classmates, so I haven't been looking my best.  Hopefully I will be better soon!

So, what are your feelings on wearing such a "spring" look in the middle of winter? I would love to hear your thoughts on my above rambling.

Liebster Award

First, I would like to say that I have chosen a winner for my giveaway, and I will be emailing the person later today.  Congrats to the winner and if you didn't win, I will have plenty more giveaways in the future to enter! Also, sorry for the neglect my blog has had recently; midterms are this week and I am just overwhelmed with styudying!

Today's post is dedicated to the Liebster award, a "sweet" award as it means in German.   The award is given to up and coming bloggers who have less than 200 followers.  I'm so happy to be nominated by Catherine Belle! Check out her blog if you get a chance.

All you have to do is:
  • Say 11 things about yourself
  • Answer the 11 questions the nominating blogger asked you
  • Ask 11 questions to the bloggers you will nominate
  • Nominate 11 new bloggers
  • Make sure you notify the bloggers you nominate

So here are 11 things
about myself:
1) I love to dance, and I did hip-hop, tap, lyrical, and jazz competitively until last year.
2) I have an 18 year-old brother, Aaron, who is a triathlete and aspiring businessman/ entrepreneur.
3) Along with English (obviously), I can speak, read, and write French and read and write Hebrew.
4) My family has an ice cream obsession and we have at least 6-9 tubs in our freezer at all times (my current favorite is anything with a peanut-butter chocolate combination).
5) I will stop what I am doing at any time to watch a great movie.
6) I work as a lifeguard part-time so I can save up for future clothes/my future apartment in NYC (I want everything to come from Anthropologie, so I need to save up as much as possible!).
7) I want to attend NYU in 2014.
8) I am a junior in high school (worst year ever), and am taking the SATs for the second time next week (along with my midterms, ugh).
9) I want to work for a fashion magazine.
10) My favorite place in the world is Paris (I went in 2010), but NYC is a close second.
11) I take classes at the Fashion Institute of Technology on Saturdays. I have taken Fabric Styling, Fashion Illustration, Jewelry Design, and Magazine Design.

Questions from Catherine Belle:

1) Where would you travel if you could go anywhere right now?
  • Paris, France
2) What is your favorite quote?
  • I love so many, it's hard to choose! I saw one a few days ago that I like, "Today you are you, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is youer than you!" -Dr. Seuss, of course (I just thought it was a really cute quote on individuality)
3) What is your dream job?
  • editor at a major fashion magazine
4) Who is your favorite actor?
  • I really don't have one, because I just love so many movies! I watched like three Anne Hathaway movies in a row last weekend, so I am pretty into her at the moment. I have also seen a lot of French movies and really like Audrey Tautou
5) What is your guilty pleasure?
  • Shopping trips in downtown nyc. They always makes me feel better at the end of a tough week. Nothing quite like the beauty of the city along with the beatuy of the stores!
6) If you could trade places with anyone for a day, who would it be?
  • Well, if this is allowed to be any time period, I would say a 1920's flapper, because they seem to be the most glamourous women in the world. If we are speaking in terms of the present day, I would say Nina Garcia, Grace Coddington, Anna Wintour, Glenda Bailey, etc. because those ladies have my dream job, I would just love to know if I would actually enjoy it as much as I think I would. (they are all major fashion editors).
7) What is your favorite song?
  • I don't know that much about music, so I don't have a favorite song, but I like music by The Killers and The Fray, and I detest rap.
8) Do you have any pets?
  • I have two dogs: a 9 year old cockapoo named Teddy and a 4 year old rescue from Puerto Rico, Roxie.
9) What is your favorite fashion item from your closet?
  • So tough! At the moment, if I had to choose, I would go with an accessory, perhaps my Dannijo bib necklace or my Marc by Marc Jacobs crossbody bag!
10) What beauty product can you not live without?
  • Urban Decay Naked palette
  • Covergirl Lashblast mascara
11) What is your favorite season?
  • Spring
Questions for my Nominees:

1) Why did you start a blog?
2) Where do do you get most of your inspiration from?
3) If you could live anywhere, where would you live?
4) What is your dream job?
5) What is your absolute favorite thing to do?
6) Who is your hero?
7) Where did you go to school?
8) Do you have any pets?
9) What is your favorite fashion item from your closet?

So, I am asking you guys to help out and comment on this post with blogs you think I should nominate. I will check them out and add them to this list as you tell me! Please help out thank you!}

Special thanks to Catherine from Catherine Belle who gave me the opportunity to participate in this! As a new blogger I really appreciate it!

One Sweater, Three Days

Okay, story time.

Every year, my mom makes the ultimate trek to Bloomingdales (a lengthy one mile from her office) to buy one cashmere item.  She calls it her "cashmere of the year", and it's always super soft, with a pragmatic shape and relatively neutral color so to be worn with as many items as possible.  She likes to only buy one a year because they are pricey (for a non-designer item) and buying just one a year makes it much more special and exciting to go cashmere shopping.  I am usually not allowed to wear said cashmere purchases, because for some reason my mom fears that I will inevitably spill acid on it prior to lighting it on fire and falling in a pile of mudd, but I digress. A little over 2 years ago, when I was a mere 14 years old, my mom came home with her yealry cashmere, a light pink open cardigan; the epitome of a pretty sweater.  I had always coveted the item, but was only allowed to look, no touching allowed.  Then someting miraculous happened.  As '10 turned to '11, and with it, a new cashmere sweater entered my mother's already full closet, I was allowed to wear the sweater to a family dinner after only asking twice, instead of the usual 10 times (that had prior always ended in a firm no). This was the first time that a cashmere purchase was allowed to venture out of the cleanliness of my mother's bedroom on my body instead of hers.  I was overjoyed, and have been wearing the sweater often ever since. It has been through a lot of wear and tear by this point, but things only get better with age, right?  It's now 2013 and that sweater has been through a lot of family dinners, not to mention school presentations, NYC outings, late nights at the library, and any other activity that seemed fit for a pink cashmere sweater. Back to the present day...

I did something unfathomable last week.  I wore said cashmere sweater three days in a row! Shocking, I know, but I hope you all can forgive me.

One good thing came out of this forbidden act, and that is the idea for this post, in which I attempt to justify my wearing of the sweater three times in a row by showing you I did indeed style it very differently each day, rendering it nearly unrecognizable (in my diluted mind) as being the same sweater as the day before.  Whether or not this flawed plan succeeded (I did have one friend baffled by the concept of my repeating a garment within the same lunar cycle, let alone the same 24 hours) is not the point, but rather the success (or not) of my ability to turn a not-so-on-trend, otherwise quite bland fabric and style of a two-and-a-half year old sweater into something that is worthy of a fashion blog and my own standards of dressing as fashionable as a 16 year old possibly can.

I feel as though I am rambling, so I think I will just show you my outfits now: sorry it it is hard to see; it was so windy! Also, ignore my red nose; I have somewhat of a permanent cold throughout the winter.

Day 1. I am super obsessed with my new app "mirrorgram"! Sweater: Bloomingdales. Urban Outfitters dress, Steve Madden boots, House of Harlow necklace.

Day 2. Madewell top, Free People pants, Tory Burch flats, Dannijo necklace, Madewell bracelets, vintage watch, Forever 21 ring, Marc by Marc Jacobs sunglasses.

Third day's a charm. This is my "Don't I look French?" outfit. Madewell dress, Marc by Marc Jacobs flats and watch, Cult Gaia flower crown.

While writing this I have been filled with memories of Spongebob's "the best time to wear a stripe sweater (is all the time)" opera rendition, and I tell you it has just brought tears to my eyes reminicing about it.  And now, I think it is time for this sweater to retire to the back of my mother's closet. At least it had a nice last couple of days and got to be featured on my blog before it passed on. Which outfit do you prefer-let me know!

New Year, New Collaborations

Happy 2013! In this unfamiliar territory I could really use the comfort of knowing that I am not the only one who wrote 2012 on my notes and then had to awkwardly change the two into a three so not to have to start all over again on a new sheet of paper; was that just me?  Anyway, it's back to school now, and I am feeling so crazed already with midterms coming up, more SAT's, and the rest of the anxiety that comes as a package deal with junior year. 2013 is definitely going to be a tough one for me, but if I can make it through, I know 2014 is going to be the best year of my life! Hope everyone had a great new years! Now, back to fashion...

It's not news that everyone loves a good collaboration (need I mention the recent frenzy over MMM x H&M?), but it looks as if 2013, at least spring 2013 anyway, will be the year for designer collabs.  And no one is happier about it than me!

Being a 16 year old, I don't exactly have the funds for designer clothes all the time.  That is why I just love, love, love collaborations.  I'm always the first one there at Target when they team up with those big names, and 2013 will be no different!

There are just a ton of exciting collaborations this spring.  Prabal Gurung has a new collection for Target, Mary Katrantzou is finally coming to America with denim pieces for Current/Elliot, and Chris Benz has a line of Cambridge Satchels.  There are so many it's hard to keep up!  I'm sure there are more that I'm missing, but these three definitely stand out in my mind. Here are some shots from each:

I love all the pastel colors of the Chris Benz Cambridge Satchel bags! I think a lot of pastels can work as neutrals, and I may have to go get that lavender one...or maybe the blue?

I am so excited that Mary Katranzou is finally coming stateside with her collection for Current/Elliot.  Some of the printed details are post cards and travel stamps from various countries, and if I can't actually go to these places, I figure wearing them is the next best thing.

There has only been one photo released from the Prabal Gurung for Target collection and you're looking at it.  If this shot is any indication of what the rest of the collection will look like, I'm pretty sure I'm going to love it.

These are only three of the lines hitting stores this spring; it is definitely a season of collaborations! I will certainly be getting up early and waiting on line for these collections, will you?

PS. Thank you all for 50 followers, it means a lot to me!
