Aren't You Freezing?!?

Urban Outfitters sweater and socks, LF skirt, Hue tights, Aqua jacket, Zara vest, Dr. Martens boots, Forever 21 beanie

The question asked by a billion people when I walked out in this last weekend: aren't you freezing?!?  The answer is no.  No I am quite happily not freezing, I am actually quite warm in the outfit above.  When I went with my friends into NYC last saturday night, they all showed a bit of concern that I would actually die of being cold in this outfit given the single-digit temperatures in our post-blizzard environment.  But I can assure you, this is probably one of the warmest outfits I own.

Let's start with the tights shall we.  They are thicker than they look and, with another layer of knee-high socks, keep me warmer than my jeans ever could. My Dr. Martens are equal parts warm, comfortable, and weather-proof, making them a must.  Moving up, my leather skirt does quite a good job of blocking out harsh winds and providing a layer of warmth for my stomach before I threw on a thick grey sweater.  Over that is a grey and black jacket and a very puffy leather and tweed and an assortment-of-other-thick-fabrics vest.  Just in case the frigid winds kicked in, I also threw on a beanie and gloves (the kind you can use your phone with of course, otherwise there is just no point).

We actually ended up walking a few miles to the restaurant we went to in NYC, and by the time we got there, I was the only one of my friends that was not absolutely freezing.  I am quite proud of this achievement given their earlier concerns.  I'm thinking this is going to be my go-to snow day outfit, what's yours?

Stay warm! xo, Sophie

Crystallize

Madewell chambray top, Free People jeans and sweater, Urban Outfitters beanie, B Brian Atwood espadrilles, Tous ring

It has snowed three times in the past week, so I am definitely officially in the winter spirit.  I was suppressing it before, attempting to still get away with wearing t-shirts and cuffed boyfriend jeans, but I have given up and decided to start dressing cozy and warm.  I have been basically living in this oversized cardigan from Free People, and, as I mentioned in my last outfit post, my beanie obsession is at full force.  I love the juxtaposition of those two quintessential winter items with my summery denim look.

Sidenote, I never realized how much weather affects blog posts until now!  It has been snowing and gloomy and dark out and the ten minutes I spent taking these shots were the only sun I have seen ages.  How do bloggers manage to do daily posts when it is like this?! I commend you all.

Have a great week:)

Brick by Boring Brick

Urban Outfitters sweater, Madewell pants, Tory Burch flats, Forever 21 beanie, Michael Kors watch, Tiffany & Co. ring

I have recently re-fallen in love with the song "Brick by Boring Brick" by Paramore.  I have been feeling a lot like the girl in the song lately (i.e. stuck in my own little world) and I have decided that I really need to stop doing that.  The title lyrics basically state that if you build a house "brick by boring brick" (take the safer and more boring route in life), you are less likely to get hurt and be crushed.  Being a senior in high school, it has been hard as of late to stop daydreaming about dream universities, dream jobs, dream apartments, etc.  But I am terrified none of those things are going to work out how I want them to, so I think I am going to stop dreaming up big, impossible fairy tale endings and start making smaller, attainable goals for myself so that I can achieve each little one instead of being crushed when the big one doesn't work out how I thought it would.  Thanks, Hayley Williams.

My little goal for today has been to get this blog post up before 4 pm.  And it is a surprisingly satisfying feeling to accomplish that, even though it is so small.

On a lighter note, guess who went black friday shopping and bought way to many things?! Yeah, it was me, good guess.  Two of the things I picked up were this sweater, which says je t'aime, meaning I love you in french.  The words are written in black ribbon and it was too soft to resist.  I also got this beanie which is surprisingly well made for Forever 21.  I now have a collection of 8 beanies and I am starting to think I might have a problem…

Anyway, I hope you all had a very happy Thanksgiving (and a lucky black friday/cyber monday), and have a great week!

Let's Try Something New: Dark Lips

Madewell tee and sunnies, Free People corduroy jeans, Superga sneakers, Topshop jacket, beanie and rings, and Lionette NY necklace

I am one of those people who absolutely despises when anything changes.  I don't like starting a new school year, a new job, a new tv show. I don't even like changing the way things are organized in my room. I just like to stick to the old, the comfortable, the method of living that I know won't have a negative outcome.  Now, changing a lipstick color doesn't exactly seem like an extreme change, but considering I absolutely despised lipstick until about last year and since then have only worn neutral shades, this might as well be a complete life overhaul for me.

Seeing as this is new territory, I made sure to do my research.  I read a lot of blog posts and watched a lot of videos on how to wear a dark lip, and I found a lot of conflicting opinions. One of the most helpful was Michelle Phan's video on dark lips for different skin tones. However, I was still cautious, so I decided to go for a drug store brand instead of a more high end product in case something went horribly wrong.  I ended up mixing together Maybelline's Super Stay 14 Hour lipstick #100 'Wine and Forever' and Maybelline's Color Whisper #85 'Berry Ready'.

Against my mother's wishes (which she knew I would completely ignore anyway), I wore the lipstick to school last week with this exact outfit and actually got a lot of compliments.  I think I might even wear it out again.  I would say, overall, my dark lips experiment was a success.  Have you tried anything new lately?

Hey Mickey You're So Fine

Urban Outfitters tee and beanie, Madewell jeans, Ash sneakers, 3.1 Phillip Lim for Target bag, Marc by Marc Jacobs watch

Before you say anything, I know I haven't posted anything in seventeen days and I know that that is terrible blogger etiquette and I apologize.  I could give you the same spiel about having school work and college applications and swim meets and clubs and blah blah blah but you have already heard that enough times so instead I'll just lie and say my laptop was epically but tragically stolen by a technologically savvy monkey whilst I was traveling on a safari in North Africa and I have since gotten a new one and so the blog posts will continue from now on.

Back to the photos. Am I the only one who prefers men's tee shirts?  I got this one in the guy's section of Urban Outfitters and it is the softest tee I have ever worn.  Plus it was like a third of the price of a similar women's version and twice the cool.  It's unfair really.  Usually I stick to my men's purchases online to avoid stares, but this time I walked right over to the men's tees and picked up this shirt with the utmost of confidence (I may be leaving out the part where I checked to make sure no one was staring at me and how I scurried away awkwardly whilst hiding the tee).  Baby steps, people.

Also, you can't tell, but these jeans are actually black-coated denim, and I am pretty sure they are the coolest pants I have ever bought.  Madewell, you have once again roped me in and my bank account has yet to forgive you.  I also never got to explain the madness I experienced trying to get some of the 3.1 Phillip Lim for Target collection but, among other things, I managed to get not just this faux Pashli bag, but also a boom! sweater, so I basically won the lottery of Target collections.  Not to brag or anything, but I am pretty proud of what I acquired considering the wrath of hungry Ebay sellers desperately fighting with me for the entirety of the collection.

I must get back to my dreaded essays now but I will hopefully post again later this week.  I have not forgotten about the fishtail braid tutorial request, so that may be coming soon (fingers crossed I can figure out how to properly edit and upload a video).  Thanks for sticking with me through this hectic time in my life!

xo, Sophie

p.s. Sorry these shots are a bit dark and blurry but I desperately wanted to post something today!
